Appel à contributions : colloque “Women in Modern Wars”, deadline : 15 juin 2016
Call for Papers
Women in Modern Wars
Venue: Lisbon, FCSH/NOVA
Date: 28th and 29th of December 2016
Deadline for proposal submission: until the 15th of June 2016
Contemporary historiography has been more and more focusing on the role of women in social, economic, cultural and politic movements in the 19th and 20th centuries. However, there is still a wide field to be explored about wars in the feminine perspective. Scientific studies on armed conflicts are still quite focused on the masculine universe – men as a war or peace decision maker or men as a fighter, for instance. Therefore, it is imperative to deepen the studies on women’s existence during and after wars.
This conference aims to promote an interdisciplinary debate over different women’s experiences during armed conflicts, in a national, transnational and comparative perspective.
We welcome proposals on women and modern wars related with the following points (not exclusively):
– Actresses/leading women;
– Women and nationalist movements;
– Violence against women;
– Women and pacifism;
– Women as fighters;
– Feminine organisations;
– Women prisoners and refugees;
– Female domestic life and/or professional life in times of war;
– Women, gender and sexuality.
We accept papers in Portuguese and English. There will be no simultaneous translation, and communications via Skype are not accepted.
Proposals should include the proponent’s name and surname, institutional affiliation, communication title, abstract (up to 500 words) and a brief bio (up to 150 words).
Please submit your proposal to womenmodernwars@gmail.com until the 15th June 2016.
